About Us

There are one hundred ninety-five countries in the world. This multimedia storytelling site is founded on the idea that the experiences students have traveling in these countries are invaluable glimpses into the world at large, and should be shared with the community. Created by students in 2009, The 195 aims to provoke a conversation that bridges the gap between college campuses and the far reaches of the globe.

The 195 was recently recognized with the Society of Professional Journalists’ regional award for Best Independent Online Student Publication.

Tracy Fuad

Creator
Tracy Fuad is a Political Science major at Northwestern University, class of 2011. Although raised in the suburbs of Minnesota, she feels born to travel the world with nothing but a backpack on her shoulders, telling stories as she goes. If she could be famous for anything, it would be for writing a book that ends up dog-eared on at least one person’s nightstand.

Shanika Gunaratna

Creator
Shanika Gunaratna is studying journalism and international studies at Northwestern. She plans to pursue a career that blurs the lines between long-form journalism, video and audio storytelling, and photography. Born and raised in New York, Shanika is drawn to cities with character and hopes to explore as many parts of the world as possible in the years to come.

Adam Sege

Creator
Adam Sege is studying journalism and urban studies at Northwestern. He loves writing, asking questions and traveling, and he hopes to combine all three reporting hard news as it affects everyday people. Clinging to a lifelong dream of becoming an astronaut, he would love to one day file a story from space.

Jonah Newman

Content Manager and Developer
Jonah Newman is a Northwestern Junior studying Journalism and International Studies. He began on The 195 as one of the first contributors in Summer 2009, and jumped at the opportunity to help develop and manage the site. He would like to see the journalism of in-depth reporting on important and diverse world issues prevail over the soundbites of 24-hour news channels, and hopes to someday be a part of making that happen.

Naomi Nason

Content Manager and Social Media Coordinator
Naomi Nason is a sophomore studying journalism and history. Her obsession with travel became out of control when, at age 15, “Life Magazine’s 100 Places to See in Your Lifetime” appeared on her family coffee table. With 22 down, Naomi hopes to spend the rest of her life working towards the “100 goal” and relaying the stories of those she meets along the way.
