Resources for students
Are you a Northwestern student looking to study abroad? We’ve compiled some helpful programs and databases to get you started.
The Roberta Buffet Center for International and Comparative Studies sponsors three summer study abroad programs in Croatia, Prague, and Istanbul. The Northwestern University programs last six weeks and don’t require any prior language experience. Students from all academic backgrounds are welcome. Each program offers two interdisciplinary courses that reflect the culture and religions of the host country. There is also an optional research course for a third credit. Excursions are included in the programs, and students can travel to other countries before or after the trip.
Northwestern’s Study Abroad Office has affiliated programs in 40 countries around the world, with course offerings ranging from Multicultural Education in Denmark to Art History in Nantes, France and Advanced Algebra in Budapest.
Global Engagement Summer Institute (GESI) is a global community development program for undergraduates offered by Northwestern University. The program will place you in a team setting with a host nonprofit organization where you’ll learn about international community development by developing and implementing a real project in areas from youth education to microfinance and beyond. GESI’s programs cross three continents, from Uganda to Bolivia to India to Nicaragua.
The Office of International Program Development has programs that target students and disciplines, such as premedical and engineering students, that are underrepresented in traditional study abroad programs and others who might not engage in international study or research due to lack of either language skills or professionally relevant programs abroad. These programs run during both the summer and academic year and are organized around three broad interdisciplinary themes: Global Health, Emerging Global Structures, and Science & Engineering.
The Office of Fellowships provides advising and support to students and alumni who seek external funding through programs such as the Fulbright Grant, Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship, and many others. Over 200 students won a variety of fellowships, scholarships, and grants over the last year. They hold many on-campus events, including the Fellowships Forum held every Thursday at 4pm during the academic year.
World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) is a world wide network in which volunteers provide assistance on organic farms in exchange for free room and board and the opportunity to learn about organic lifestyles.
